When Praise Is a Choice: How to Bless the Lord at All Times (Psalm 34:1)

Scripture Reading:

“I will bless the Lord at all times;

His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

— Psalm 34:1 (NKJV)

Let’s be honest for a moment: praising God when everything is going well feels almost automatic. When the bank account is healthy, the children are thriving, the medical report comes back clear, and the promotion finally lands, thanksgiving spills out of us without much effort.

But what happens when life takes an unexpected left turn?

What happens when you’re staring at unpaid bills, wrestling with silent heartbreak, or sitting in the quiet weight of unanswered prayers? Is it really possible—or even realistic—to “bless the Lord at all times”?

David didn’t write Psalm 34 from a palace balcony while surrounded by wealth and comfort. He wrote these words while running for his life, hiding in caves, and pretending to be insane before a foreign king just to survive (1 Samuel 21:10–15).

Yet, right in the middle of danger and raw uncertainty, David made a deliberate choice: “I will bless the Lord at all times.”

Praise in difficult seasons is not about faking happiness or ignoring pain. It is a conscious, faith-filled decision to anchor your heart in who God is, regardless of what you are going through.

1. What Does It Actually Mean to “Bless the Lord”?

We often think of blessing as something God does for us—and He certainly does! He grants us peace, provision, and protection. But how can finite humans “bless” an infinite God?

In the original biblical language, to bless (barak) means to kneel before, to honor, or to ascribe supreme worth to someone. When we bless the Lord, we aren’t adding anything to His completeness; rather, we are acknowledging His unchanging goodness.

Notice David’s language: “His praise shall continually be in my mouth.”

Praise isn’t meant to be an occasional event reserved for Sunday morning church services or moments of triumph. It is meant to be the underlying rhythm of a believer’s daily life.

2. Moving from “Feelings” to “Focus”

One of the biggest obstacles to consistent worship is assuming that praise must always be driven by emotion. If we wait until we feel like praising God, our worship will be as unstable as our daily circumstances.

Here is how we practically shift from emotional praise to intentional worship:

A. Separate God’s Character from Your Circumstances

Your situation may change from day to day, but God’s character remains constant. He is still good, still faithful, still merciful, and still sovereign. When you can’t praise Him for what is happening, you can always praise Him for Who He is.

B. Guard Your Words in the Midst of Frustration

David specifically mentions that praise should be in his mouth. In moments of stress, it is easy to let complaint, panic, or bitterness dominate our speech. Replacing negative self-talk or worry with declarations of God’s word guards your heart against despair.

C. Practice Micro-Gratitude

In overwhelming seasons, looking at the “big picture” can leave you feeling drained. Start small. Thank God for the breath in your lungs, the morning sun, a warm meal, or a comforting friend. Small steps of gratitude pave the way for deep, abiding peace.

Pause & Reflect: Is there an area of your life right now where you have allowed temporary circumstances to quiet your praise? What is one truth about God’s character you can thank Him for today?

3. Building an Intentional Life of Faith

Living with an “at all times” praise mindset doesn’t happen by accident—it takes daily practice and spiritual nourishment.

4. The Hidden Power of a Sacred “I Will”

There is a divine breakthrough that occurs when you lift your voice in worship despite tears in your eyes. Paul and Silas demonstrated this when they sang hymns at midnight from inside a dark prison cell (Acts 16:25). They didn’t wait for the prison doors to open before they praised God; their praise preceded the breakthrough.

When you declare, “I will bless the Lord at all times,” you are telling your soul that God is bigger than your present trial. You are choosing trust over anxiety, faith over fear, and worship over worry.

Life will not always be filled with easy moments, but you can always choose a faithful God.

Frequently Asked Questions About Praising God in Hard Times

Is it hypocritical to praise God when I feel sad or overwhelmed?

Not at all. In fact, offering praise when you don’t feel like it is one of the most sincere acts of worship possible. Scripture calls this a “sacrifice of praise” (Hebrews 13:15). It shows that your trust in God is built on His character, not just your emotional state.

How can I praise God when I am waiting on an unanswered prayer?

Shift your focus from the outcome to the Relationship. Thank Him for His past faithfulness in your life, His promise to never leave you, and His perfect timing.
